About us

Our Mission

Supporting communities to keep children in school and out of poverty.

Zimbabwe Educational Trust is a diaspora-led UK registered charity. Our collaborative model helps our partners to access the funds they need, build capacity from within, track outcomes and deliver impactful projects in vulnerable communities.

We believe in providing education directly and removing the barriers to education wherever they may be. Our mission is “Supporting communities to keep children in school and out of poverty.”

Our History & Work

Our History
We support grass-roots Zimbabwean organisations to deliver for some of the nation’s most vulnerable young people. Education is the sustainable route out of poverty for people and nations alike.

Here’s where it began for us.

Following the independence of Zimbabwe in 1980, primary and secondary education flourished. However, there were limited opportunities for young people to continue into further and higher education. Established in 1987, ZET sought to address this problem by helping disadvantaged students travel to the UK and gain places at colleges and universities in the UK. Our goal was to help the new generation of Zimbabweans to gain the knowledge and skills needed to drive forward the nation’s development.

Over a 17 year period, over 1,000 young Zimbabweans were helped to access further and higher education. ZET negotiated with education providers to obtain fee waivers or reductions, and helped to find accommodation for these students when they arrived in the UK. However, in 2006 – as diplomatic relations between Zimbabwe and the UK were becoming increasingly strained – 15 of our prospective students were all refused visas to enter the UK.

It became clear that the political climate of the day rendered our work impossible. For that reason – coupled with evidence that the educational advances of the 1980s and 1990s in Zimbabwe were being reversed – ZET shifted its focus to support charitable educational initiatives within Zimbabwe. Now our partnership model works with grass-roots Zimbabwean organisations to deliver for some of the nation’s most vulnerable young people.

Our Work
Our projects all link to education but their scope and reach varies greatly. We deliver life skills, financial management, specialist vocational training, access to birth registration documents, sustainable farming methods and so much more.

We deliver education directly or look to remove the barriers to education. Some of our work is in schools but much of it is not and support can come in many forms for example we:

• Train young women with life skills and vocational skills to get them into work.
• Help vulnerable children access birth certificates, a legal requirement for attending school.
• Help primary schools feed their students, reducing time missed with illness and improving concentration in class.
• Educate girls and boys groups about their sexual and reproductive health and rights, keeping them healthy and avoiding becoming parents before they are ready.
• Educate girls and boys on the protections of the law and how to avoid child marriage.
• Help primary schools earn an income with which they can buy books, bricks, computers and more.
• Help communities farm sustainably tackling malnutrition and building climate change resilience.
• The list goes on, to find out more check out our project pages or get in touch.

The socio-economic and socio-cultural conditions of life in modern Zimbabwe are creating vulnerabilities which keep many children from accessing education and reaching their full potential. With your support, we are making a difference

Our team

Safeguarding

ZET are committed to the safeguarding and wellbeing of all individuals, including project beneficiaries, staff, volunteers, contractors, and partners. We have a zero-tolerance policy for all forms of abuse.

Protecting children and vulnerable adults is of paramount importance. We work in areas where complex needs intersect with poverty and poor service delivery. For many of the people we work with they live large portions of their lives in the shadow of former abuses or the danger of more. We work with each of our partners to ensure that the people we exist to serve feel safe, know the rights and protections afforded to them, know how claim them and how to report issues.

If you or anyone becomes aware of a safeguarding concern please contact us immediately.
